April 9th Quarantine Day ???
Hearing Dr Flick lay out the specifics of occupational deprivation, occupational apartheid and occupational alienation was helpful. I kept getting occupational deprivation confused in my brain a lot, but her laying out the differences will help keeps things straighten out. She gave good examples, well not good because poverty, child slavery and deafness aren't great but they make sense. Also pointing out health literacy, this isn't something I really thought about very much. Not that I know everything, but for me if I don't know a word or what something means at the doctor's office I don't hesitate to ask questions. This might be because I have had the same doctor since I was born so I am comfortable around him and I am QUICK to Google a word or because I just want to know what is going on. When the video she showed up featured the woman on it that did not know she had a hysterectomy.... I stopped breathing! Really thinking and understanding the other person's knowledge level and what they comprehend/ understand is something that really should be talked about more in the health care "environment". I think sometimes we know something common so we assume it's common for everybody and shame on us a little bit for that. This is a solid eye and ear opener for me and I will carry this with me throughout my career to make sure my client's fully understand what I am talking about for their treatment plan.
